Around 1980 I worked as a security guard at the Royal Star and Garter on Richmond Hill. It was at the time a hospital for war wounded military personnel.

I had to do a security check throughout the night and there was a basement room, close to the boiler room, which chilled my bones every single time - as I would shine my torch in, to see tens of thousands of the fuckers scuttling away. On mass, you would hear them squeaking.

I then had to walk in and put my card into a slot to prove that I'd checked the room. I was paid £108 for a 75 hour week.
